Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
