The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
