Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
